What
to do
Press Directly on the
wound until the bleeding stops, using a clean cloth (or if you
have to, your hand). Hold the edges of the flesh together
If the bite is minor,
clean it well with the soap and water. Then put on
antibiotic ointment and a bandage
If the bite is deep,
don't clean the wound after you stop the bleeding. Call your
doctor or go to emergency for prompt attention. A deep bite
may need stitches and could become infected
If possible (whether
the animal is wild or a pet), have your local animal control
center confine the animal and check it for rabies. Un
vaccinated pets - along with stray cats and dogs, and wild animals
such as raccoons, bats, foxes and skunks - may carry rabies.
Rabies infection is rare but can be fatal if not treated.
