Terrorist activities hampering education at Sadat College

TANGAIL, Nov 26 : Terrorist activities are hampering education of a large number of students of Government Sadat University College here.

According to sources terrorist activities and frequent clashes forced the authorities of the Sadat College to close the reputed institution on a number of occasions that hindered the academic activities of a large number of students of the college.

It is gathered that about 10,000 students of various disciplines are studying at the college. The teachers of the college and the guardians of the students are worried over the situation prevailing at the college in the recent times. The future of the students of the college has become uncertain due to terrorism perpetrated by a section of students of the college.

Some students told this correspondent requesting anonymity that some identified student leaders are responsible for the violence at the college time and again. These leaders are busy to serve their own ends at the cost of the future of the general students of the college. If they fail to materialise their purposes they can go to any length.

It is learnt that Prof. Sultan Mia, Principal of the college, was severely beaten up by a group of disgruntled expelled examinees of the last Masters final examinations led by some so-called student leaders on October 15. The Principal was rushed to Tangail Sadar Hospital in a critical condition. The teachers of the college adopted a resolution not to discharge their duties until the miscreants are punished. Since then a stalemate has been prevailing at the college.

The National University authorities cancelled the Sadat University College centre for Honours and Degree Subsidiary Examinations and shifted the same to Kumudini Girls College after the October 15 incident.

Police arrested 26 students of the college in connection with assaulting half a dozen of teachers. But none of the 12 accused was arrested so far, alleged some teachers of the college.

A meeting at the DC's conference room with State Minister for Education Lutfar Rahman in the chair decided to open the college on November 17.

A delegation led by Deputy Minister for Education Abdus Salam Pintu accompanied by Kader Siddiki BU MP, police, guardians and officers attended the meeting held at the college auditorium.

At the meeting the teachers and guardians of the students were annoyed at the speech of Kader Siddiki which went against the teachers and in favour of the students.

A news story regarding this had been covered in The Independent two years ago. After publication of the news Tk 33,00,000 had been sanctioned for the construction of a sluice gate on the Haridara river to bring vast tracts of land under cultivation.

Some farmers of Halhalia village and a high school teacher told this correspondent that after completion of the construction work of the sluice gate they could bring their fallow lands under cultivation of paddy. They also expressed the optimism that they would be able to change their economic condition soon if they can produce bumper crops on their lands.

MOULVIBAZAR, Nov 26: Traffic jam has become a common feature in the town in recent times, causing immense sufferings to the dwellers, reports UNB.

The severe traffic jam during office hours almost everyday put the office-goers to immense troubles; very often they can not reach their offices in time.

The dwellers said traffic jam occurs due mainly to a large number of rickshaws plying in the town without license. The areas of the town where traffic jam is a regular phenomenon are Central road, West market, Chowmuhani, Court road, Old Hospital road, Shamsher Nagar road and Chadnighat area. These are the busy roads of the district town.

The authorities concerned are yet to take any action against the owners of the unlicensed rickshaws. Several factories are making rickshaws everyday in the town without permission from the authorities concerned. As a result, it is difficult to know the exact number of rickshaws plying the streets of the town.

Most of the rickshaw-pullers are seasonal workers who bother little about traffic rules. About Tk 10,000 to Tk 14,000 are needed to manufacture a rickshaw, said an owner of a rickshaw garage in the town.Large-scale smuggling of spare parts of rickshaws from India, lack of vigilance by the authorities concerned have made the rickshaw business a lucrative one in the recent times, he added.

Mahmudur Rahman, chairman of Moulvibazar pourasabha, told this correspondent that steps are on to stop plying of unlicensed rickshaws.

    Essentials dear

Another message adds : Prices of essential commodities have shot up in the district causing sufferings to the consumers.
